July Update

To: USD 350 Students, Families, and Community

From: Josh Meyer, Superintendent

Date: July 22, 2020

Subject: Planning for the start of school

As we move into the last weeks of July, many are wondering what will happen with schools this fall.  We are working constantly to plan and prepare for the start of school.  The governor’s order to delay until September 9th was not upheld by the state board of education.  While a delay is not mandated, there is a clear need for us to adjust our calendar to allow more time to train staff and prepare for this crazy school year.  The original start date of August 20th will likely be moved back by a week or two.  An amended calendar will be approved by the board in the coming days.  Information will be sent to parents when a final decision is made on a start date.

While it is obvious that school is important for students, we must do our best to keep students and staff safe and healthy.  We are developing a phased plan for the school year and we hope to finalize the plan by the end of July.  This plan will include any requirements for masks, how we serve meals, other similar issues, as well as how teaching and learning will happen.  Our goal is to have as much on-site learning as possible in a safe environment.  There will likely be times when remote learning, or even a mixture of on-site and remote learning is needed.  We are prepared to work with families for remote learning regardless of the situation.

While we did our best to get through a difficult situation last spring, the level of rigor was not where it needs to be for adequate student progress.  Things will be different if we must move to a remote learning environment this year.  Parents should be aware that the time required and the amount of content in any remote learning this year will be very similar to what happens in a normal school day.

The date for enrollment has been pushed back from August 4th to August 11th.  Information about the adjusted calendar, the plan for the school year, and information about enrollment will be sent to families around August 3rd.

It is difficult to predict what will happen from day to day, but know that we are working to get students back to school in a safe environment as quickly as possible.
