About the Board of Education:

Members of the USD 350 Board of Education are elected from three districts. Two members represent each district, and one member is elected at-large. The board meets once per month in the basement of the Ida Long Goodman Memorial Library. Regular board meeting dates are scheduled for the second Monday of the month at 7:00 pm, with limited exceptions.

 Member District No. 1 and 4 is defined by the south boundary of Cleveland, St. John, and West Cooper townships, excluding St. John city proper.  All areas north of this line are member district no. 1 and 4.

Member District No. 2 and 5 is defined as all areas south of the southern boundary of district 1 and 4 and north of the northern boundary of district 3 and 6 within the city limits of St. John.

Member District No. 3 and 6 is defined by the North borders of Richland and Ohio townships, including the part of city of St. John on a line from the West city limit East on Third Street to Broadway, North to Fourth Street and East on Fourth  Street to the city boundary.  All areas south of this line are member districts no. 3 and 6.

Member District No. 7 is defined as an At-Large position and represents the entire school district.

ELECTION INFORMATION:

Positions 4, 5, and 6 are up for election coming up in November.  The deadline to file with the county clerk is noon on June 2nd.  Click on the link below for more information about running for school board.

Board of Education Approved 2025 Legislative Priorities

 

School Finance

  • Ensure the continued application of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) to the base state aid funding formula.
  • Maintain the low enrollment weighting funding to ensure small schools can provide equitable opportunities for students.
  • Establish a legally consistent definition of the state’s requirement for funding the excess cost of special education.  Currently the law calls for 92% of excess cost, but the funded percentage is much lower.  Tie future increases in special education funding to CPI.

 

Tax Policy

  • We oppose efforts to shift public tax dollars to private schools and homeschools.  Whether directly or indirectly through vouchers, education savings accounts, or tuition tax credits.  School choice is an important freedom for families, but we oppose providing public funds to schools that are not accountable to the same standards as public schools and are not required to accept all students.

 

Local Control

  • School board members are elected by their local communities.  Local control ensures that educational decisions and policies are made by community representatives who understand the unique needs and priorities of their school district.
  • We oppose laws that restrict local control to determine whether or not part-time enrollment and participation and activities is best for the district and the students.  We also oppose the increased restrictions on how to appropriate and spend dollars for at-risk student development.
  • We oppose any efforts to mandate school district consolidation.  This decision should be a local decision.  We support financial incentives to maintain level funding for a period of time when school districts consolidate.

 

KPERS Retirement System

  • Consider the possibility of transitioning KPERS 3 employees into KPERS 2. The benefit provided in KPERS 3 is comparatively inadequate and does not provide employees with a comparable level of retirement benefits.  This has a negative effect on recruitment and retention of quality people to work in Kansas schools.
